Not only is she very friendly but she is also a very hardy hen with beautiful shades of brown and cream feathering and ideally suited for first time and young keepers but with her cheeky and inquisitive nature she will please everyone.

 

 Light Sussex

The Sussex was bred to be a dual purpose bird and is one of the most productive breeds of poultry. They lay large eggs that are cream to light brown in colour. A person owning a hen of this breed should expect approximately 240 to 260 eggs a year. The light and white varieties are the best choice for layers and recently there has been an olive green coloured egg introduced to some Light Sussex breeds, although these green egg layers are very rare.

 

Blue Belle / Blue Ranger

Blue Ranger chickens lay on average up to 240 eggs a year. They are a very placid chicken, docile and friendly and are ideal for most set ups especially free range, back garden, allotments and smallholdings. Eggs are a plum brown colour.

 

 

 

Black rock

The Black rock is a prolific layer of large to extra large brown eggs. They are docile birds and easy to handle so make wonderful pets. They are ideal for free ranging but can be just as happy kept in a run.
They produce about 280+ eggs in the first year and are persistently good throughout lay.

 

 

 

Welsummer

Welsummer chickens were created in the little Dutch village of Welsum. They are highly sought after as a production bird, laying a good amount (275 per year) of beautiful dark red/brown eggs. These beautiful birds are also well known from their role in American advertising as the Kellogg’s Cornflake rooster “Cornelius” who is a Welsummer.

 

 

Buff Sussex

 A very old English breed, the oldest varie-ty being the speckled. Brahma, Cochin and silvery grey Dorking were used in the make up of the light variety. Old English Game has figured in the make up of some strains of browns.

 

 

 

White Leghorn

The Leghorn  is a breed of chicken with origins in Tuscany central Italy. The first birds imported to North America in 1853 were called Italians.
